        In recent years, advancements in nanotechnology have revolutionized cancer treatment for therapeutic intervention. Currently, different types of nanoparticles are studied as imaging contrast, absorptive heating agents to confine heat into targeted tumors, and carriers of therapeutic agents. The challenge is that treatment outcomes are often depending on nanoparticle deposition and distribution in tumors. In the first part of this talk, we evaluate magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia, which is a heating approach to damage tumors, when an external alternating magnetic field is applied to the nanoparticles to generate localized heating to targeted tissue region. The focus of this research is to design heating protocols for tumors with unique geometries and nanoparticle distributions based on microCT scans of tumors with nanoparticle deposition. Our heating protocol is then tested and evaluated in animal experiments in the treatment of prostatic cancer tumors embedded in mice. The second part of the talk focuses on evaluation of how mild whole body heating decreases interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) in tumors, therefore, leading to more nanoparticle delivery to tumors. Experiments have been performed on vivo animal models and nanoparticle distribution in tumors are quantified and analyzed based on microCT scans of resected tumors.


        Dr. Liang Zhu received her BS degree in Engineering Thermophysics at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, in 1988, and her PhD in Engineering at the City University of New York in 1995. Currently, she is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr. Zhu was Chair of the K17/Biotransport Committee of the ASME Heat Transfer Division and Bioengineering Division. She is an ASME Fellow. Her research is focused on heat and mass transport in biological tissue with emphases in clinical applications. NSF and FDA support most of her research.
